socially ill

Our society has fallen under a grave social illness. We have become too apathetic about life. We've witnessed so many shootings, bombings, and mass murders that the lives lost now mean nothing to us. We have let ourselves grieve merely with hashtags and profile picture filters without really understanding the gravity of what this means. We have let so many innocent people die for trivial reasons (if any) and yet we don't seem to care enough to do anything about it. But it's not that I don't understand it either. It's really hard to care when if you do, you're threatened to be crushed by the severity of it all. But it's still important to remember that the person shown on the news is someone's mother, father, sister, brother, friend, you name it. That person had a story, a life, a dream... but now it's been shattered. I became more passionate about this apathy for life after I came back from Ecuador. Watching a live number report on the amount of deaths from unclean drinking water hit me harder than it would have before because I now had a face to put to that number and a personality to mentally & physically erase from the earth. Although unclean drinking water is another issue entirely that I am concerned about, it still relates to this one as it helped demonstrate how much we should care about these deaths versus how much we actually do.
