I don't know where to begin. I don't know what to tell you to expect. Oh God it's so much. Good? Bad? I'm not so sure. There's a little bit of everything.
1. Literally no one talks about how HOT it is in Boston. Everyone ONLY talks about how blistering cold it is but honestly, the humidity combined with the wrath of the sun is horrifying and it actually makes me miss the Californian heat & drought. And the BEST part is that it's only this disgustingly humid when you move in & when you move out, the two times when you actually wish it were more chilly because you're sweating as you carry the box filled with your life in and out of your new/old dorm.
2. Get ready to meet many many Type A personalities. Even as someone who went to Whitney, I don't think I've ever met so many Type A people as I have in my 2 weeks in college. Just be ready. I swear they're still nice though :-) which makes it a lot better.
3. I don't understand how I was able to sleep at 2/3 am to wake up at 6 am to go to school for 7 hours a day. Here? I can't even wake up at 9 am successfully anymore. At least I'm getting more sleep. Am I right :-)
4. Be ready for some new lingo. Have you ever heard of "skying", "air sip", "bubble tea"? Well you're about to. Be ready to protect your way of speaking.
5. Appreciate the people around you. At Harvard we have something called HUDS (Harvard University Dining Services) and they are so so so under-appreciated. It's not easy to make enough food for 1600 undergraduates that will please each and every one of them. Appreciate the people at your university - you don't know their story. And this pretty much goes for everybody - your professors, your peers, your version of HUDS, etc. Just respect those around you. It'll help.
6. Be ready to spend lots and lots of money. What do you need to buy? Going into college is going into adulthood. And with adulthood comes buying everything that your parents used to provide for you at home. Tissue boxes, water, towels, food, snacks, BOOKS (oh GOD), new clothes, pencils, highlighters, notebooks, binders, shampoo, soap, a shower caddy, and more and more and more. The list never ends. Save every dollar you can. You'll be able to use that dollar on something else like granola bars for when you miss breakfast... because you will miss breakfast inevitably.
7. Be okay with brief hellos and even faster good-byes. You meet soo many people in college and it's only expected that you not remember each and every one of them unless you have photographic memory. Or you'll just say hello in passing as you scrunch your face, attempting to remember where you met them and what their name is. Bottomline, it's a lot of names and a lot of faces but not enough true, genuine relationships. But don't rush those. Don't even worry. You'll be okay.
This is all for now. Can't wait to update y'all on my college life again soon.
